Mental Health & Mood

Fatigue is a common symptom of Sickle Cell

Mental Health and Mood

The stress of having a lifelong condition such as sickle cell has effects on mental health and mood. Dealing with acute pain episodes and chronic pain is very stressful and can cause you to be constantly alert for triggers or signs. When paired with modification in lifestyle it is common for people to develop stress, anxiety, or depression

It is also possible for individuals with sickle cell to feel stigmatized. This can be due to having the disease, a delay in puberty or growth, or having to take opioids to manage pain. The feeling of being stigmatized can also affect your mental health.

  • Treatment/Prevention: Speaking to a counselor or learning more about sickle cell disease may be helpful in overcoming stress or anxiety.
  • The Sickle Cell Disease foundation offers free one-on-one counseling
  • Connecting with others with sickle cell can also offer you a sense of community and people who understand your struggles.
